The design assignment for the first year of the masters took place in Hong Kong. We travelled around in China, to eventually start the design for the new M+ HK museum in Hong Kong itself. The city is shaped by its three dimensional transport system, a complex network creating a variety of patterns. A city that is never asleep, always transforming. Inspired by this we made the design for the M+ Museum. Today, art is more diverse than ever and the museum needs to serve the growing diversity of this art industry. So the museum has be able to expand and adapt over time.
The capsules are white serene boxes serving the art. The counterspace of the capsules contains the ‘machine’ which is a 3D transport network. The machine exists of the climate-system, the distribution network of people and goods, and the movement of program. Movable platforms can create the extreme formations. The structure is a steel framework which is the spine of the capsules and the machine. The structure stands on a limitless grid. Today M+ stands for museum. In 2025 it will becomes the art center of Hong Kong. In 2050 it has grown into a district.
